Insiders reveal party and government resisted any review of possible misconduct to avoid further public attention

The Hong Kong government and the largest political party in the city have sought to downplay a controversy involving a district councillor’s brief attempt to compete in a beauty pageant, the Post has learned.

Both sides had walked back on any further investigation into whether her actions amounted to misconduct to avoid “reviving the public’s attention” on the episode, sources said.

It was also understood that the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) was also cautioned to be more mindful about its members’ personal conduct after Angel Chong Nga-ting was seen as mobilising her district council assistant to attend the interview for the beauty contest.

Chong had reportedly brought her assistant in the Sai Kung District Council along to the interview, who distributed cold drinks to reporters on site. The assistant was also seen providing Chong’s contact information as a councillor to journalists.

Multiple insiders from the DAB said Chong had not informed the party of her decision to join the beauty contest.
