A 53-year-old man has died after being hit by a car performing burnouts.

Police say two women were also struck but had left the scene before emergency services arrived.

Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle and have urged witnesses to come forward.

Police are searching for the driver of a car who allegedly killed a 53-year-old man while performing burnouts in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.

Emergency services were called to a fire trail off Haul Road in Stockrington, north-west of Newcastle, early Sunday morning following reports of a crash.

Police say a Ford Fairmont sedan was performing a burnout when the driver allegedly hit three people and fled the scene.

They say two women who were hit had left the scene before emergency service crews arrived, while a 53-year-old man who was struck suffered critical head injuries.

Police allege the car was found burnt out on McFarlanes Road at Chisholm, near Maitland, at around 2.40am.

Investigations are continuing and police are urging any witnesses to contact CrimeStoppers.
