City leader makes vow in videos setting tone for next year of his administration, while calling Northern Metropolis new economic growth engine

Hong Kong’s leader has said he and his administration are committed to being “reformers who confront challenges, rather than those who complacently avoid improvement”, while pledging to pursue change and explore new markets to take the city to fresh heights.

In the first video, published in 2023, Lee surveyed the city from The Peak, highlighting the importance of “farsightedness” in governance, according to his special assistant, Jenny Wong Tsz-yuen, who appeared in Sunday’s production.

The 2024 clip, for the second anniversary of his term, featured Lee taking a ferry across Victoria Harbour, symbolising the need for the government to “ride the wind and waves” to overcome challenges effectively.

The video released on Sunday, as well as one on Saturday, sets the tone for another year in office. Saturday’s clip shows him watching butterflies in the Hong Kong Wetland Park while Sunday’s one has him piloting a simulated drone at the City Gallery exhibition.

Titled “From Cocoon to Butterfly: Reaching New Heights”, the videos underscored the government’s focus on ambitious reforms in the coming year.

“The external environment has posed many challenges to us. We would rather be reformers who confront challenges, rather than those who complacently avoid improvement,” he said in Sunday’s video.
