How to Factory Reset a MacBook, Windows Laptop or Chromebook

There are a few reasons a factory reset on your laptop or Chromebook may be necessary. For one thing, it can helpimprove the performance of your laptopif it's a little older by clearing out some old files that are no longer needed. But you should also factory reset whenever you're giving old technology to a new person or receiving used tech that hasn't been wiped already. This gets rid of all apps, files, folders and personal information that doesn't need to be shared with the next user. It's a good part of thegeneral process of preparing your computer for gifting.

The big-picture steps you take to refresh a laptop are the same regardless of whether it's a Windows laptop, Apple MacBook or Chromebook — save your old data, remove all personal information, then go for a factory reset. It's the actual step-by-step procedure that differs depending on the type of laptop you're dealing with. Below, you'll find everything you need to know and do before giving your laptop a second life.

I typically save the laptop's physical cleaning until last (why clean your fingerprints off twice?), but you may want to start there — especially if it's been gathering dust in the back of a closet, under a bed or in the garage for the past several years. The basic equipment required for a good laptop cleaning is a can of compressed air and some disinfectant or alcohol wipes. For a slightly deeper clean, you may also want to grab a screwdriver and remove the bottom cover of your laptop (if possible) so you can carefully blow out any dust that's accumulated on the fans and vents.

After the laptop is clean, you can also wipe down the power adapter and any related accessories. It's also a good idea to ensure the power adapter is still in good, working condition. If you're still not quite sure where to start with the cleaning, check out ourcomplete guide to getting your laptop looking its best.

Before you even think about doing a factory reset on your MacBook, you need to save any data you want to keep. You may have already done this at some point if you migrated data from this old MacBook to a new one using Apple's Migration Assistant. If that's not the case, it's time to hook up an external drive and useMacOS' built-in Time Machine tool to create a backup. If you have an iCloud account, you can back up your data there as well.

You'll also want to log out of all accounts before wiping your MacBook's drive. Start with iCloud, Find My Mac and iMessage. Then look for individual software accounts you may need to deregister. If you use a browser other than Safari, such as Chrome or Firefox, you should sign out of those as well. Basically, if it's got personal account information, you'll want to sign out. (Here's how to find account settings in MacOS.)

Two other things you should do before a factory reset: Unpair any Bluetooth devices — particularly if the MacBook is being gifted to someone in your household — and reset the NVRAM. The latter is memory that holds onto settings that the MacBook needs before loading MacOS. On startup, press and holdOption-Command-P-Rto reset the NVRAM.

If you've done everything above, you're ready to return your MacBook to its out-of-the-box state. On an Intel-based Mac, reboot the system and press and holdCommand-Rto enter Recovery Mode. (Accessing Recovery Mode on MacBooks running on the company's M-series chipsis different, however.)

Read more:MacBook Factory-Resetting Tips and Tricks

Once in Recovery Mode, you'll see a window of MacOS utilities. Use theDisk Utilityto erase your drive. When that's complete, you'll be able to reinstall MacOS. After it's done reinstalling, you'll reach theSetup Assistant. From there you can stop and shut it down or set it up for the recipient.

As with gifting a MacBook, start by backing up any important folders and files on your old laptop to cloud storage or an external drive. If you're doing the latter, go toSettings > Update & Security > Backup > Add a driveand select the external drive. Then click on Backup Now.

A lot of paid software requires you to sign in with an account, a product key or both. Before you wipe your laptop's storage, sign out of any accounts and deregister software licenses (if possible). If you need those product keys to re-register software on a new laptop, be sure to save that information. If you use a browser other than Edge, such as Chrome or Firefox, sign out of those as well. Basically, if it's got personal account information, sign out.

Ready to clean the drive and reinstall Windows? Go toSettings > System > Recovery. At the top of the window, you'll see Reset this PC. Click on Get Started and select Remove Everything from the box that appears. From there, you can select to reinstall Windows from the local drive or download it from the cloud. After that, Windows cleans the drive of all software, settings and data. When it's done, the laptop will start in its setup assistant mode. You can then stop and shut it down for a fresh-out-of-the-box experience or do some setup, which is a nice touch, especially if it's going to a family member so they can use it right away.

If you used a Microsoft account to sign in to the laptop, the last thing you'll want to do is remove the laptop from that account.Sign in to your accountfrom another computer and click on the Devices tab at the top of the page. Find the laptop that you're gifting on the list of devices, and at the bottom of the listing, you'll see the option to remove the device. Click it and you're done.

Chromebooks are the easiest to refresh. That's mainly because of their cloud-based design. Google also makes it extremely easy to wipe your data and securely clean the internal storage as well as remove the Chromebook from your Google account.

Before you even consider gifting an old Chromebook, check its auto-update expiration. Google only guarantees Chrome OS and browser feature support on non-Google hardware for so long. Every device has a date on which it stops receiving updates, aka its AUE date. Current models receive updates for eight years; older models could potentially be a year or two away from reaching their AUE.

Google maintains an AUE list, so finding the date your Chromebook will stop receiving updates is as easy as locating your model on that list. The AUE can also be found in your Chromebook's settings. Here'show to find the AUE from Google and in your Chromebook.

Powerwash is Google's built-in factory reset tool for Chromebooks. Once you've backed up folders or files stored on the Chromebook's internal drive, running Powerwash will securely scrub the system and reboot. When it restarts, it'll be just like the day you unboxed it.

The actual Powerwash typically takes less than a minute to complete. A simple search for "powerwash" in your Chromebook's settings will bring you right to the feature, buthere's everything you need to knowabout the procedure.

Although you've removed youraccountfrom the Chromebook, you haven't removed theChromebookfrom your account. Start by signing into yourGoogle account and head to the Security settings. If you use the Chrome browser, you can also click on your account avatar and selectManage your Google Accountfrom the drop-down menu.

In theSecuritysection, scroll down until you see a box labeledYour devices, which lists all the devices attached to your account. At the bottom of the box, click onManage devicesand find the Chromebook you're gifting and selectSign Out.

Give the Chromebook a good external cleaning, gather up any accessories and it's ready to hand off to your giftee.

Watch Friday the 13th and 24 More Fantastic Horror Movies for Free on Tubi

It might not be rare for the 13th day of the month to fall on a Friday (it happens 1-3 times a year), but it's still a great excuse to travel back in time 45 years to Camp Crystal Lake for one of the most famous horror movies of all time –Friday the 13th.

The 1980 slasher film, featuring the tormented killer Jason Voorhees and his hapless camp counselor victims, was hated by critics yet loved by audiences. The horror franchise has spawned 11 sequels (so far) and transmuted a blood-soaked hockey mask into a sacred horror relic.

Top-tier streaming platforms likeNetflixandPrime Videomay offer the latest horror hits, but for the scariest films of the 20th century, it's hard to beat Tubi. You can watch everything from creepy classics like Night of the Living Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre to cult favorites like The Descent and Terrifier. Whether you're in the mood for a slow-burning psychological thriller or something blood-soaked and over-the-top, there's almost always something good on Tubi.

Tubi does have advertising breaks that increase in length as you progress through the movie, but they're not terrible, and they might give you a chance to catch your breath before the next scare hits. Check out our top 25 horror movies on Tubi right now.

Twenty years after a string of unsolved murders shuttered Camp Crystal Lake, a new owner tries to reopen the camp with disastrous results. One by one, young camp counselors are struck down in gruesome fashion. Can one "final girl" survive the wrath of Jason Voorhees?

Produced in 1974 for a mere $140,000, Tobe Hooper's indie film about a family of cannibals who just want to be left alone (and eat everyone who bothers them) introduced several slasher horror tropes that have since become cliches, as well as the terrifying human monster Leatherface.

Clive Barker might hatethe name "Pinhead," but fans loved it, as well as the character called "Lead Cenobite" in Hellraiser's credits. The supernatural gore-fest is filled with disturbing practical effects and buckets and buckets of blood.

George Romero broke the mold with this germinal horror flick that introduced a generation of horror fans to the walking dead. Shambling "ghouls" terrorize a group of young adults in a farmhouse, yet the danger comes as much from other humans as from the undead

Widower Shigeharu Aoyama holds a fake movie audition to find a new wife and finds himself enamored with the quiet and reserved Asami. As they enter a relationship, he ignores the warning signs about her dark past. When the truth is finally revealed, he finds himself trapped in a nightmarish descent into pain, obsession, and torture, much of which involves sewing needles.

This unique throwback flick set in the 1980s is painstakingly made to appear it was filmed then too. College student Samantha takes a babysitting job in a house in a remote area but soon learns she was hired to take care of a completely different charge who may be linked to some sinister happenings.

This faux-documentary follows Deborah Logan, an elderly woman with Alzheimer's who's been exhibiting disturbing behavior. The film crew finds a connection to a local physician involved in ritualistic murders. A terrifying supernatural secret unfolds as we learn the real cause of Deborah's ailments.

Written and directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (who also play the lead roles), this low-budget indie sci-fi/horror film features two brothers who return to the UFO cult where they were raised, only to find that many in the community haven't aged at all. Perceptions and reality unloosen as the brothers learn the true secrets behind the strange phenomena at Camp Arcadia.

For those who prefer their dread to creep up on them, this psychological horror film provides a sinister slow burn. An ex-boyfriend accepts a dinner invitation from an old romantic partner with a traumatic past and her new man. His paranoia and suspicions keep everyone on edge through the early night, until the party breaks into unexpected chaos and a shocking conclusion.

When a mysterious illness spreads through a quiet Korean village, the locals turn violent and begin dying under strange circumstances. Soon, a bumbling police officer named Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won) is drawn into the investigation. But what starts as a series of bizarre deaths quickly spirals into something far more sinister. With his own daughter at risk, Jong-goo must uncover the truth behind the evil infecting his town before it takes over.

This French zombie film takes a minimal approach to the undead apocalypse. Lead character Sam wakes up in his ex-girlfriend's apartment after a party to find the building and city have been taken over by zombies. Slow and mostly silent, the film explores Sam's loneliness and dwindling sanity as he tries to stay alive all by himself.

A trek through the moors of Yorkshire goes terribly wrong for two American backpackers who find themselves attacked by a strange beast. David Naughton's transformation into a werewolf features legendary special effects — the movie won the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup in 1982.

Twin brothers Elias and Lukas become (understandably) suspicious of their mom when she returns home from having facial surgery. Her head is wrapped in bandages and she starts showing some uncharacteristically cold and unsettling behavior. The boys become convinced she's an imposter, so they take drastic measures to find out the truth.

Lucio Fulci's Zombie (billed as Zombi 2 in Italy though not a sequel) is a late 1970s horror classic featuring an island-based undead outbreak that threatens to expand into New York City and beyond — a classic zombies-eating-a-lot-of-humans flick that's perfect for a 3 a.m. watch. Don't miss the underwater battle between tiger shark and zombie.

This English-language remake of the Japanese horror classic follows a reporter investigating a cursed videotape that leads to the viewer's death seven days later. But culturally, it's much more than that, having been influential in popularizing J-horror around the globe, including the American version The Ring, which had its own unique phenomenon.

When siblings Trish (Gina Philips) and Darry (Justin Long) take a road trip through the countryside, they stumble upon a mysterious figure dumping something into a tunnel. Curiosity turns to horror when they uncover evidence of a monstrous secret buried beneath the surface. Hunted by an ancient creature that awakens every 23 years to feed, the two must find a way to escape before they become its next meal.

When ex-con Arkin (Josh Stewart) breaks into a wealthy family's home to steal a valuable gem, he thinks he's pulled off the perfect heist. But someone else got there first: a masked killer with a house full of deadly traps. As Arkin realizes he's trapped inside with the family and the sadistic intruder, his robbery turns into a terrifying fight for survival.

When a stash of videotapes are discovered in an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York, the footage reveals the decades-long reign of terror by a sadistic serial killer. Through interviews, police evidence, and the killer's own recordings, investigators piece together the horrifying extent of his crimes. But with the suspect still at large, the tapes raise more questions than answers.

After her mother's death, Annie Graham (Toni Collette) and her family begin to experience disturbing and unexplained events. As the activity begins to escalate, Annie's daughter starts behaving oddly, her son is traumatized, and Annie struggles to hold everything together. But as things grow more dangerous, she realizes their family may be caught in something far more sinister than grief.

Sergeant Neil Howie visits the island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. But when he gets there, he discovers the islanders have a sinister secret behind their paganistic rituals. As he delves deeper, he finds himself tangled up in their wicked ways, leading to a shocking climax that's been copied and parodied many times since.

In this classic horror parody, the Hyatt family inherits a house with a cursed book and soon meets a string of monsters and other various creatures. A vampire named Waldemar and the sinister Van Helsing are a few of the colorful characters the family encounters as they banter with the ghosts and demons of their new home.

An antique book dealer (Johnny Depp) and creepy collector (Frank Lagella) square off in this tense horror/thriller about a tome that supposedly summons the devil. Using a classic film noir style, the film slowly draws Depp into a broader mystery, while the understated action gradually builds to a fiery climax at the gates of hell.

When a group of friends reunites for a cave-diving adventure in the Appalachian Mountains, their trip quickly turns into a nightmare. Trapped underground after a collapse, the women soon realize they're not alone in the darkness. As they search for a way out, they're hunted by something lurking in the tunnels. They have no light, no way out, and soon, they start to lose hope, too.

Maddie, a deaf and mute writer living alone, finds herself trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse when a masked killer decides to make her his prey. Unable to hear his movements or call for help, she must figure out a way to outmaneuver him and potentially turn the tables on him during this terrifying ordeal.

Damien Leone's indie slasher flick is an absolutely brutal gore fest featuring a truly grotesque and evil villain — Art the Clown — who terrorizes two young women on Halloween night. The franchise has already spawned a trilogy, but it's definitely not for squeamish viewers.

Traveling This Summer? An AirTag Can Give You Peace of Mind

Summer is here, delivering soaring temperatures, bright sunny days and the temptation to take off for a vacation. Summer is peaktravelseason for a reason, withcamping tripsand beach weekends being popular getaways. However, traveling anywhere also comes with stress. Keeping track of your luggage during flights, or remembering where you set up your tent can leave you feeling overwhelmed when you're supposed to be relaxing. Thankfully, AppleAirTagsare here to help.

These tiny gadgets are small enough to be discreet, but they're powerful enough to help you keep track of items like abag, purse, suitcaseor a set of keys. They're fairly easy to set up, and once they're connected to yourphone, you don't have to do much else. Here are some ways to get the most out ofAirTags.

Generally, you need to be within Bluetooth range to find your AirTag, but you can use Apple's Find My service to locate Apple's tiny tracker if it's farther away, as long as it's still in range of another Apple device. (Here's how theFind Mynetwork works.) To do so, just put your AirTag into Lost Mode and you'll get a notification once it's within range of the Find My network.

For more details, here'show to tellif an AirTag is tracking your location on Android and adeep diveinto AirTags.

If you're setting up camp in a location you've never visited, it could be useful to place an AirTag inside your tent so you can easily find your campsite. For instance, if you decide to hike several miles one day, you can use Find My to look up the AirTag's last location (your tent) and get directions back to the campsite. Remember, it'll need to be within range of someone else's device, so don't rely on this out in the wilderness. (This is also why Apple advises you not to use AirTags on pets.)

How often have you left your coat behind in a restaurant, bar or friend's house? Forgetting to grab your jacket when you head out is easy to do, especially if the weather is warmer than you expected or your hands are full ofleftoversand to-go cups. If you know you'll be hanging your jacket on a coat rack or the back of a chair when you arrive, place an AirTag inside the pocket so you know where you left it. This can help prevent yet another favorite jacket from getting lost, and less money out of your wallet to replace it.

Airports can be tricky tonavigate, and can be especially difficult when you're trying to find the correct luggage pickup. Sometimes you wait 30 minutes until your bags finally roll out on the conveyor belt, and sometimes they get lost. To relieve the stress of trying to locate your suitcase, you can put an AirTag tracker inside so you can track its whereabouts.

This can help you find out if your bags were left on theairplane, if they're on the conveyor belt but you haven't spotted them yet or if someone mistakenly grabbed your luggage. Once you find out where your bags are, you can remedy the situation and continue on to where you're going. Don't worry, AirTags are TSA-approved so there's shouldn't be any issues with placing them in your luggage.

Place an AirTag inside your laptop bag so you stop misplacing it.

Laptop bags can be easily left behind at a cafe when you're picking up coffee for everyone at the office. When your hands are full and you're distracted wondering how you're going to open your car door, it's hard to remember to grab your bag from the booth you were sitting in. That's why it's a good idea to place an AirTag inside one of the pockets. You will be able to locate your expensive laptop and save any confidential company or personal information in your bag.

If it hasn't happened to you, you probably know someone who has had this experience. You get home from a bike ride, go inside to grab water and something to eat and completely forget about the bike you left outside. Or maybe you went to the store, didn't lock your bike up and when you came back it was gone. If you place an AirTag in a hidden place on the bike, you can easily locate it.

We don't recommend tracking the bicycle down on your own. It's best to notify the police and let them retrieve your bike so you can avoid any dangerous situations. This method also works on your car if it's been stolen or towed, or if you can't remember where you parked it. If you have an iPhone and it's connected to your car via Bluetooth, your phone can locate where you last left it.

Your iPhone can find your AirTag.

AirTag is commonly used to locate these items.

Don’t Use an AirTag to Track Your Pet, Experts Say. Try This Instead

Apple AirTags help keep track of your keys and bags, but can they help track your pet? It seems simple enough to place anAirTagon your pet's collar so you can track them 24/7. It's certainly an option, but it might not the best one. After all, it does have limitations and risks of its own.

Reliability and safety both must be factored into the conversation when it comes to deciding whether or not to strap an AirTag to your pet. To learn if AirTags are acceptable for pet tracking, we spoke with two experts. Here's everything to know.

Apple AirTags were created to help keep track of personal items by using a "secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network,"according to Apple.

The small devices, costing$29 per tag, are often used on suitcases, purses, backpacks and key chains. Apple's website doesn't mention using AirTags on pets, probably for a good reason.

Although AirTags may seem like a convenient and relatively cheap way to keep track of your furry friends, experts advise against it.

If AirTags are attached to a pet's collars, there's a chance it could lead to a medical emergency, saidDr. Shannon Vawter, medical director and veterinarian at Thrive Pet Healthcare Wedgewood in Nashville, Tennessee.

"There's a battery in there, and if the dog or cat ingests this — which there'sseveral articlesand reports in our veterinary magazines where people have cited that this has happened — then we have to do a surgery called a gastronomy or an enterotomy and go fish that tag out," Vawter said, adding that the battery is dangerous because if it starts "to corrode or open up with that acid inside, it'll burn a hole right through their GI tract."

Vawter said the emergency surgery to remove the AirTag could range in price between $2,000 and $5,000, adding that dogs are more likely to chew or eat an AirTag, but that cats could also be at risk of doing so.

Tracking limitations are another reason experts caution against them.

"An AirTag has very limited tracking capabilities and accuracy in rural areas, the exact place that you're likely to need it the most," saidMaleki Burke, founder of Snootiful Hound, a company that created escape-proof harnesses for sighthounds. Because AirTags depend on nearby Apple devices, Burke said that if your pet is lost in a rural area, the location may not be accurate or available.

"This is especially problematic if you're trying to track a dog that has wandered far away from populated areas," he said.

Both Vawter and Burke recommend that the first line of action to keep your pet safe is to get them microchipped. A microchip is a small, permanent chip that's equivalent to thesize of a grain of riceand is embedded into the pet. According toPawlicy Advisor, a pet insurance marketplace, microchips for dogs cost between $25 to $60. If you adopt your pet from a shelter, it may be chipped beforehand. In that case, the shelter would provide you with the microchip identification number during the adoption process.

"Any pet can get a microchip at any age, and it is not much bigger than a vaccine needle," Vawter said. "We do it all the time with distraction, like giving them some cheese or a little bit of peanut butter, and they don't even know they get it."

When someone finds a lost pet and brings it to an animal shelter or a veterinary office, the pet is scanned for a microchip. Microchips contain information about the pet and the owner's personal information so they can be reunited quickly. If you need to update your pet's microchip information, visit theAmerican Animal Hospital Association's microchip registry lookup. Enter your pet's microchip ID to find where it is enrolled, then request to update all necessary information.

The microchip is great for someone who finds your pet, but you may still want to pair it with a device that can actively track them. That's where a GPS collar can come in handy.

"Let's say your dog gets loose, the chances are, in the short term, they're not going to go too far," said Burke, who personally uses the GPS trackerTractivefor his dog. "If you have a GPS on them and you can track them, you can get them back in minutes."

Like many GPS collars, Tractive requires a monthly subscription. The basic planis $13 a month or $8 a month if you sign up for a year-long subscription.

Vawter also recommends a GPS tracker over an AirTag because they're typically flat and built into the collar, rather than dangling off the collar.

"They're very large, so they'd be difficult to eat or bite into," she said. "The other thing is, they're relying on satellites, not people's phones or Bluetooth. The only negative about a GPS — and that's why I still want a microchip — is the GPS has a battery, and it's short-lived."

Vawter added that if your pet keeps escaping, talk with your veterinarian to find the root cause of why it's happening in the first place.

AirTags are great for your keys and other personal belongings, but there are safer and more foolproof ways to track your pets.

"Make sure your dog is microchipped," Burke said. "But also, if you're worried about your dog escaping, just get a GPS. The peace of mind is worth its weight in gold."

Arnold Schwarzenegger is joined by another legendary action star, Carrie-Anne Moss, for season 2 of Netflix's action-comedy series FUBAR, which is out this week. In the series, Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro play a father-daughter spy duo Luke and Emma Brunner. Moss spices things up this season with her portrayal of Greta, a German former spy who has a romantic history with Luke.

This month marks the return of Netflix's Trainwreck documentary franchise, which explores some of the most sensational or disastrous news stories of the recent past. Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, which arrived on June 10, is the first film in the new batch. It digs deep into the tragic Astroworld concert that left 10 fans dead after chaos ensued at Travis Scott's 2021 performance. Seven more installments of Trainwreck will drop over the summer, one each week through July 29.

In Deep Cover, Bryce Dallas Howard plays Kat, an improv comedy teacher who is approached by an undercover cop (Sean Bean) to infiltrate a group of criminals. Kat, along with two of her students (played by Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed) go undercover to infiltrate the gangs of London, and pretty soon they realize how deadly it can be to commit to the bit.

Julianne Moore is currently starring in Netflix's Top 10 show Sirens, but she's also got another prestige project arriving this week, the thriller Echo Valley, which is out on Apple TV Plus. In the new film, Moore plays Kate, who is forced to piece together the mysterious details of why her daughter (Sydney Sweeney) came home one night covered in someone else's blood. Brad Ingelsby, who wrote the HBO Max series Mare of Easttown, penned the screenplay for the film which arrived on Friday, June 13.

Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast, has created an empire based on her open, honest discussions of sex, feminism and culture at large, and Call Her Alex is a look at the woman behind the microphone. The two-part series follows Cooper as she performs her Unwell Tour, while interspersing incredibly intimate revelations about her past and the formative, sometimes traumatic experiences that shaped her world view. The series is out now on Hulu.

Peacock's latest entry in the true crime genre, The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets, is a three-episode docu-series that focuses on the secret life of architect Rex Heuermann, the man accused of killing New York-area sex workers for over a decade. The series arrived on June 10. (If it leaves you wanting more, Netflix also has its own doc, Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, a thoughtful variation on the same case that pays particular attention to the victims.)

It's never safe to go back in the water when Jaws is around. Steven Spielberg's shark-infested summer blockbuster celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and in honor of that milestone, the entire Jaws collection is headed to Peacock. Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3-D (1983) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987) are all joining the streamer on June 15.

NBA Finals 2025: How to Watch Pacers vs. Thunder Game 4 Tonight

It's a quick turnaround for Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Preparing for a Summer Road Trip? Download Google Maps Offline for Stress-Free Navigation

Summertime is in the air, and it's the perfect season to get away for a weekend. Whether you're preparing for your nextroad tripor popping down to the beach to soak up some sun, chances are you'll be driving to get there.Google Mapsmakes it easy for you to get where you're going while avoiding roadwork or bumper-to-bumper traffic along the way. Turn-by-turn directions ensure you never get lost, even when you're driving in an unfamiliar area. However, if your trip takes you through remote regions, you may not have internet access, which can cause issues.

Without a net connection, Google Maps can't help you reroute, recover from a wrong turn or find a gas station. You're stuck with whatever directions you started with. Luckily, there's a smart work-around: You can plan ahead and download your map for offline use. With offline maps, you can still access turn-by-turn navigation even when you're completely disconnected. Here's how to make sure you're never lost, even without service.

Want to learn about other Google Maps tips and tricks? Check outhow to blur your house on Google Maps, and take a look at thesethree Google Maps featuresyou'll definitely want to be aware of.

First off, you won't download all of Google Maps in its entirety. Instead, before your trip, you'll want to download a specific area, which could be a city, county or region where you'll be spending time and might not have service on your phone.

To download a map in Google Maps offline, open the Google Maps app on iOS or Android and tap your profile picture on the top right (you must be logged in to your Google account for this to work). In the menu that appears, tapOffline maps > Select Your Own Map.

You can download multiple Google Maps areas offline.

Use your fingers to place the map you want to download within the confines of the rectangle border. Use one finger to move across the map, and a two-finger pinch to zoom in and out. As you move around the map, you'll see how much storage space the download will take up on your phone. Once you're happy with the area, tapDownload.

Note: Alternatively, you can type a city or other area into Google Maps and then hit theDownloadbutton that appears in the pull-up window to download the map offline but this only works on the iPhone.

You must be connected to Wi-Fi to download the map. If you want to download over cellular, go to theOffline mapspage, tap the gear icon on the top right, tapWhen to download offline mapsand selectOver Wi-Fi or mobile network. Once your map is downloaded, you'll be sent back to theOffline mapspage, where you can see all your offline maps.

You can only download a map that's a maximum 250MB (what will appear in the selected map is roughly the size of Maine).

Now you'll be able to use Google Maps even when you're offline in the area you downloaded — and in that area only. You won't get extremely accurate travel times or alternate route options because traffic and other road issues are not accounted for but you will get a general ballpark idea of how long your trip should take. Transit, bicycling and walking directions also are not available offline — only driving directions.

You'll know you're using your offline map when you see a little cloud icon with a line through it in Google Maps.

How a Cyberattack at a Company You’ve Never Heard of Nearly Derailed My Anniversary Carrot Cake

Every year since we got married, my husband and I have celebrated our anniversary with a carrot cake. Some years it was from theamazing bakery in our old neighborhood, while others it was a questionably fresh effort picked up at a train station shop on the way home from the office, but often I would bake my own.

The funny thing is, neither of us really likes carrot cake. It just somehow ended up being the top layer of our wedding cake, so we have one every year. That's tradition for you.

This year, for our 20th anniversary, I had my mind set onbaking. Throwing together a three-layer cake in the middle of a busy work day may sound daunting, but it's well within my skill set. And I was armed with a new recipe and a giant bag of carrots. I just needed a few key ingredients.

Always the procrastinator, I started filling my online shopping cart the night before. I also needed the makings for a fairly fancy dinner, as well as my regular groceries for the week. But to my surprise, the virtual shelves of my NYC-area Whole Foods were uncharacteristically bare. It brought backmemories of the pandemic. Basic store-brand items that I buy every week like tortillas, pizza sauce and cheese were out of stock. And so were the raisins and cream cheese I needed for my cake.

Slightly panicked at that point, I remembered the news of acyberattack at one of Whole Foods' major suppliersa few days before that forced it to take its systems offline. Some experts had speculated that it could affect store supplies, but I hadn't expected the impact to be so quick and so significant.

Cybercriminals have long-targeted retail companies, along with those that supply them, for both their money and data. They know that if they're successful in breaching those systems, retailers will likely pay to make the problem go away.

That said, this year has been particularly bad for cyberattacks on retailers, says Max Vetter, vice president of cyber at Immersive, which specializes in training companies for how to deal with online threats.

So far this year, retailers includingAdidas,Marks & Spencer,Harrods,Cartier,Victoria's SecretandNorth Facehave all sustained cyberattacks that affected their operations. And while Whole Foods' supplier, United Natural Foods, isn't technically a retailer, the impact of the attack on it continues to be felt by consumers.

"This is not normal," says Vetter, who worked in British law enforcement and as an intelligence analyst before joining Immersive. "We haven't seen this in retail and food any other year that I can remember."

For companies, that can mean millions in lost sales and unexpected costs related to dealing with attacks. In the case of United Natural Foods, its stock price tumbled on the news, dropping about 20% over the past week.

For most consumers, it means aggravation more than anything. In my case, I was able to find my raisins and cream cheese at a brick-and-mortar store, but I paid more than I wanted to and it took time I didn't have out of my day.

But for some shoppers, the consequence can be more dire. If the only store in a remote town can't restock its shelves, that can mean no food for people without the means to get to another one.

"That's something definitely to be aware of and I don't think we've thought enough about this," Vetter said.

When online attackers go after retailers, they're looking for two things: money and data.

If they're able to lock a company's system up withransomware, it's likely that the company will pay up to get its systems back up and running. The longer they're down, the more money the company will lose. On top of that, blank websites just aren't a great look for retailers. Shoppers who fear for their data may choose to shop somewhere else.

And the attackers are after their data. Credit card numbers and online account credentials can obviously be sold in bulk to fraudsters, but so can less obvious customer data like names, emails, mailing addresses and phone numbers.

Rewards points tied to loyalty programs run by food and restaurant companies are also as good as cash to cybercriminals, says Rob Ainscough, Silverfort's chief identity security advisor for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Double extortion attempts, where attackers lock a company's system down with ransomware and then stealandthreaten to release a company's customer data, have also become common, he says.

"So if they don't get paid on the ransom, they're going to try to get paid on the data," said Ainscough, who spent a decade heading online security for a large multinational retailer before joining Silverfort.

Arguably, that's what attackers are going for when they target any kind of company, so it remains unclear why they seem so fond of retailers this year.

Vetter says it could be because retailers are seen as easy targets. While banks and other financial institutions have long boasted strong online security practices, and industrial companies have also boosted their defenses in recent years in the wake of high-profile attacks such as the2021 ransoming of Colonial Pipeline, retailers have been slower to do the same.

It can be tough, he says, for security officials at companies that aren't particularly tech-focused to get the resources they need from executives who may just see cybersecurity as a cost. Unlike other kinds of flashier technology, when cyberdefenses work, they go largely unnoticed.

"I think retail is one of those areas that probably just didn't think it was much of a problem," Vetter said, referring to the possibility of cyberattacks. "Obviously, I think they do now."

It's one thing if a cyberattack keeps you from ordering some new clothes or jewelry. It's another when it keeps you from putting food on your table.

The attack on United Natural Foods and the subsequent shortages at many Whole Foods stores brought to light exactly how fragile the food supply chain can be. But Whole Foods, with its affluent customer base and locations in big cities and suburban areas, isn't the only store its customers have to shop at.

That's not true for many of the members ofthe Co-Operative Group. It's a UK-based chain of stores that are owned by its members and serve more than 17 million people in the UK, many of them retirees who live in remote areas and may not be able to drive.

For some, they're the only stores in places like small villages on islands off the coast of Scotland where people might need to get on a ferry to shop somewhere else, Vetter says. So whenCo-op got hit with a cyberattacklast month, it had a lot of people panicking.

After detecting the breach,Co-op quickly took its systems offline, possibly preventing them from becoming infected with ransomware. But the disruptions to its supply chain and logistics operations had a huge effect on deliveries to stores, whose shelves were quickly left bare.

Co-op was left scrambling to prioritize and figure out what stores absolutely needed to be resupplied, despite the group's limited operations.

"There's a real human risk there of starvation," Vetter said. "You don't think of a relatively small store as critical to national infrastructure, but for some people it is."
